Mrs McKonochie about the end of the fourth month of her
pregnancy; since its commencement has often been
troubled with stomachic complaints, bilious vomitings,
and a costive habit, not uncommon to many in her
situation

Dir Saturni 19a Junii 1784

Complains of a pain in her head and back, pulse full
and quick
, sometimes rather cold, but does not shiver,
which is succeeded with heat. For two nights past had
a reaching, and vomiting, obstinately costive, for which
she took magnesia and Rhubarb, without effect.

Five ounces of volatile salts

Enema Emmoliens, without any irritating
materials. This induced a discharge of indurated
fæces - At night found the feverishness continue
with a Nausia and reaching --

Saline Mix, a spoonful [three times a day?] at any hour

Dir Satis 20a: Ibidem

The fever continues to day without intermission, tho it
sometimes rather remits, that is not so hot at one time
as another, but the pulse always quick, Thirst, Tongue
clean as yet, had no stool since last night, therefore
took an Enema which has had no effect, but I dare not
repeat it, least, I fatigue her too much -

Evening

Feverishness with head and back ach continuing &
more violent, with reaching and Nauseating her victuals;
no appetite -

Mixtur Saline continued.
from the degree of heat it is advised that she should
take no wine or animal food -- Stewed prunes, sago
Tamarind water, gruel &c are their substitutes --

[Page 2]

Dir Lunæ 21a Junii 1784

Rested tolerably well during the night, tho hot and
rather coldish by turns - Nausea and vomiting frequent,
particularly when the fever begins to encrease; when
not so hot, has been much plagued with a cough
since last night - She does not say she finds any fixed
pain in her breast like a stitch - pain in the back less,
but the head ach greater from stress of coughing --

Saline Mixture [Increased?]

Solution of G. Arab. & Sperm Ceti Sweet Spirit of Nitre {illeg}
This night find she Nauseates the above mixture indeed
I believe it encourages her to vomit as she has done so.
From the heat and degree of fever and fullness of
the pulse
I proposed letting a little more blood, but
it is referred {illeg} till tomorrow morning.

Mixture Saline per se

Dir Martis 22a Ibidem

Rested tolerably last night and as she is not so hot
and little fever this morning, it is thought a
general blooding not adviseable - cough severe.
No stool since Saturday. Enema repeated on the spot

About Eleven this forenoon the fever with a most severe
head ach
returned, great heat, throbing of the Temporal
Arterys
&c pulse quick, and rather hard and full

Applied six Leeches to the Temples which
bled agreeable to intention a sufficient quantity
afterwards a cloth dipt in Laudanum was kept on
the os frontis all night - The Enema did its duty
She is more cool at bedtime, but cough troublesome

Mixture and drink continued --

Dir Mercurii 23 Ibidem

Restless from the cough during the night, some little
strains of blood in a thin spittle
-- No expectoration
Pain of the much less today - likeways the head-
ach
except when coughing -- which is

[Page 3]

most troublesome when the fever is least - To the saline
mixture I joined some of the Squills which she cannot
take as she Nauseates it after trying a little of it
but tho she chanced to vomit about that time I
am rather inclined to believe it was owing to the
return of the feverish heat which happened
about that time. She has been out of bed this
evening above an hour - Nine at night and is
so cool just now that I have allowed her a some
Weak white wine whey for supper. The heat
and obstinate costiveness have hitherto prevented
me from giving Laudanum - Urine rather
high tho voided during the remissions, cloud
suspended

Dir Jovis 24 Ibidem

continued pretty cool and rested tolerably for the most
part of the night, but in the morning much
troubled with the cough - Small strains of blood with¬
out expectoration is mixed with her spittle
- Head
ach
and pain of the back much less, except when
incited by the cough This forenoon had pain
in her bowels and rather more in her back
which I apprehend is owing to confined wind &
hard fæces as she has had no stool since the
last Injection -- Stomach wont bear purgatives
therefore when she will agree she shall have
the Enema repeated.

Mixture is solution of G. Arab. Nitr. &c
This mixture stays on the stomach --

10 at night -

The Injection was not administred, but as she
is pretty cool have given an anodyne draughts
of ten drops of Laudanum -- Urine drops a
sediment this afternoon

[Page 4]

Dir Veneris 25a Junii 1784

Slept quietly five hours but immediately
upon awaking was attackt with a severe hard
cough
which continued till now, ten oClock,
Heat rather encreased, pulse more full and quick
with the little strain of blood I see some concacted
mucus which is the very first sign of expector¬
ation, ordered an Enema - and mixture as
yesterday. I consider it as particularly
unfortunate that she cannot take honey &
from the delicacy of her stomach I cannot
give her some expectorating Medicines which
probably I otherways might - My intention
has been to prevent as much as possible any
inflammation by coating drink, medecines
and diet - perhaps she ought to have been
bled again, but I must confess her daily
remissions prevented me from insisting much
upon a further general blooding --

2 oClock afternoon

The Injection has had surprising good effect a great
discharge of indurated fæces, which must be of great service
to her - Heat not great just now - pulse not near so full or
hard
as in the morning -- Notwithstanding some objec↑tions↑
to new made Milk Whey I have gote her perswaded to try
it for drink this night, and from its cooling, diluting
nature expect good effects from it - I think and am
perswaded that all Vinous drinks, must be against her
complaint, and cough particularly. Not much head ach
or thirst at present, Tongue sometimes dry, but clean. Urine
that was made this fore noon rather high and Cloud
suspended -- has not reached any to day
