All persons associated with a Document are logged by their role; these include author, addressee, patient, patient's relative, other physician / surgeon, person mentioned etc. Where possible basic biographical information, including gender, title, birth and death date and occupation has been recorded. For some individuals appearing more frequently, further biographical information is provided. Please note that names often have variant spellings; that for reasons of inheritance some men occasionally adopted their wife's surname,; and that in early-modern Scotland some women on marrying retained their original surname.
