The Case of Mr Urquhart for which Dr
Cullen's opinion and Advice is requested is
as follows –

Mr Urquhart is about 50 years old and of a
hale Constitution. On the 4th. of last January he
felt a weight and uneasiness about the stomach for
which he took a Vomit. It strained him a good deal
in the Operation and brought up little more than the
water he had drunk to work it off –

Three Days after this he was sudddenly seized with a very
violent pain about the Pitt of the stomach that struck
him likewise to the back. This continued several hours
and was at last removed by a natural throwing up
of some very bitter stuff and some laxatives that
were given him: He continued tollerably easy some
Days well enough as he expressed it if he could do
without eating; but tho he had an appetite, Eating
any thing solid renewed the pain nor was he easy

[Page 2]

till he threw it up again.

These three weeks by past the Pain in the stomach
has recurred more frequently and with greater
violence then formerly generally every second Day
and begins always after he has been some hours
in Bed – The intermediate Day he feels extremely
weak and languid and there is a great yellowness
over his
Eyes Face and Hands. He is very feverish
while the Fitt lasts but when it is over his Pulse
falls to the natural state his urine is very thick
and high coloured and tinges Linnen with a yellow
Colour. He was once bled when the Pain was ex¬
tremely severe some Days ago and there was a
good deal of Size on the surface of it –
After the violence of the Paroxysm is over he common¬
ly falls into profuse Sweatings

He is generally very costive and says he was particular¬
ly so when he took the Vomit on the fourth of January
He always has pain more or less in the right side

[Page 3]

which Pressing upon it encreases

It may be proper to inform you that Mr Urquhart
lived several years in Maryland that he had an
Ague that continued many months on his first going
to that Country and that soon after it was cured
on eating something that disagreed with him and rid¬
ing hard after he was seized much in the same man¬
mer he has been of late and every year since (now about
Ten [years?]) he has been subject to Cholick thre[e or]
four times a year. He was advised to take a g[lass?]
of the sacred Tincture when threatened or attacked by
them which he says used to give him Ease
I shall look for your answer in Course and am
with great Esteem and Respect

your most obedient
humble Servant
H. Rose
