The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

[ID:820] From: Mr Andrew Liddell (Liddle) / To: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / Regarding: Miss (Patient) / 16 April 1772 / (Incoming)

Letter from Andrew Liddell regarding an unnamed female patient from Orkney, suffering from 'scrophulous complaints' for several years. Cullen had been giving advice on her treatment over the previous two years. The patient wants a mercury cure but Liddell wants Cullen's support in his refusal of it. Fearing this letter, which was sent through 'Mr Douglas the Apothecary', may have miscarrried, Liddell subsequently includes a copy when writing to Cullen on 13 June 1777 (See ID:823).

Dear Sir,

I transmitted to you, last May, the case of a young
Lady in Orkney, who had for several years been subject to scro¬
phulous complaints
, & also itchy eruptions over the surface of
her body
. -- The course you was pleased to prescribe to Her
has been punctually followed ever since: viz. a Saline Solution
for two months, afterwards an Electuary of the Bark for a fortnight,
in Spring the Decoction of Tusilago, & then the Solution & Bark
renewed: This course was directed to be continued at least two
years. -- But as hitherto the Eruption continues in her skin
unabated, and there is a tumour of the same nature as formerly
advancing fast in her cheek, the young Lady is greatly frightened,
& becom very impatient. On that account She has been sent
over to this country, her friends expecting that I could do her more
service after seeing her. -- The young Lady is in very low spirits,
as quite despairing of recovery: but having heard from some
people that mercury has been given in this complaint, she --
insists impatiently upon having it tryed, notwithstanding
all I can urge against it. -- I am therefore under the necessity

of troubling you again, that I may have your positive author¬
ity to support me in refusing it, if to you it seems proper to
do so. -- I beg you will let me know your Opinion as soon as
you can conveniently, & forward it by post. -- The tumour in
her cheek is pretty hard & moveable, but I fear will not be kept
from bursting, as it is increasing fast, tho' attended with very --
little pain. The young Lady has also several of the glands of
the
neck upon the affected side much swelled, but otherwise is
in good health and looks well.

With best respects to you & your Lady I am
Dear Sir
your most obedient humble Servant
