For Mrs Ord
Your Letter came too late on Saturday night to be
answered in course. I dont expect that Mrs Ord will have Men¬
ses again & therefore whatever share the ceasing of these may have
had we cannot hope to restore them and therefore we must take up the
case on another plan. I think there is some suspicion of Gout at
least I am persuaded that if the pains of the feet had remained the other
ailments of the leg & thigh would not have happened. The Bark &
other Medicines you have already employed seem to be to have been
very judiciously ordered but as they have failed we must change our
ground a little. While she continues to be liable to cold & her fits
vomits will be necessary & if you will try to give 5 grains of Ipecac.
as soon as a cold fit comes on without encouraging the vomiting by
giving warm water. I expect that you'll find that this will shorten the
fits give better rest & prevent their return. I hope that the proper
repetition of [that?] dose will have as a Diaphoretic effects on the
whole symptoms & for the rest I would insist entirely on diaphoretic
remedies. I think you might try a dose of Dover's Powders at first ℈i.
I would have her laid in flannels & give the dose in the morning.
continuing the sweating in a moderate way with as little heat as possible
11 or 12 hours. If that succeeds you may repeat it & with an increase of the
dose as you shall think proper. In the intervals of that you may try
the Draught on the other page (↑below↑) at bed time. This I hope will give her
better sleep & mend all her complaints but it may increase her costiveness
& this you must obviate by a proper laxative perhaps the laxative Electuary
on ye other page (↑below↑) may answer. Whenever you have any thing new to say
I shall be ready to add what I can. I say nothing about diet, as her appetite
is good I think it hardly necessary to say any thing about choice but I
should think that great moderation in quantity would be most proper.
Take one drachm each of thin {illeg} cinnamon water and caryophyll syrup, half a grain of tartar emetic, and twenty-five drops of thebaic tincture. Label: Diaphoretic Draught to be taken at bedtime.
Take two ounces of powdered crystal tartar, one ounce of juice of French prunes and a sufficient quantity of simple syrup, and make an Electuary or Lochoch. Label: Laxative Electuary, 1, 2 or 3 teaspoonfulls to be taken in the morning.
