I am now at this place on a visit to
Mrs. Parker who consulted you a few Months ago for a
Schirrous Breast, and I cannot resist her request that
I shou'd inform you of the progress of her disorder.
The Pulvis Cicutæ was begun with as soon as she returnd
from Edenburgh which was gradually increased from
three grains to near five each dose. It constantly made
her giddy, and occasioned an universal thrill or uneasy
sensation over her whole Body; the hardness in the Breast
at the same time being at least at a stand, if not lessened --
About a fortnight ago some ichoric appearances were
observd, the whole skin grew yellow, stools were
frequent and clay-colourd and her Water much laden
with Bile along with great lassitude and quick pulse.
The Cicuta was omitted and small doses of Rhubarb
given every now and then, with a raw Egg once or
twice a Day. I find to Day that this looseness still
continues, tho more moderate, and the stools of the
same clay colour. The abdomen much enlarged {illeg}
these three last Days, and an obscure undulation on
striking with a Hand, and without any perceptible
partial hardness; she is short of breath and her pulse
beats 120 strokes in a Minute. She has no appetite,
her thirst is immoderate, and she looses Flesh daily.
Under these unfavourable circumstances I can see
little prospect of relief, however for the present have
directed a solution of Sal Diureticus, in simple Waters and
write this to give her satisfaction, and if any thing
occurs to you which you think may be of use to
her shall be happy to hear from you, at any rate hope
you will favour me with a Line which will much oblige.
