Letter from William Laing about the treatment of his son’s tumour with plaisters and different pills, in joint consultation with the addressee an unnamed practitioner. My friend Professor Stuart's
Son was here yesterday, & brought with him the
joint Consultation of you & Dr Cullen. I observe
you do me the honour to approve of the external
part of my prescription, which consisted of the
Minderin thro the day, & a plaister of equal quanti¬
tys of ther Gum & mercurial, & morning & Evening
the Hemlock formentation. I have now to acquaint you
that the internal part consisted of the pil. merc. lax.
washed over with a draught of the Decoct. Lignor.
and a strict mild, cooling Regimen. I intended the
pills should give him two or three loose stools twice
a week, & be less laxative the intervening days, but
he did not take a sufficient number for that purpose
tho' I told him to encrease or diminish the dose ac¬
cording to their operation. I was going to add Sal. Polychr.
to the Decoction, but postponed it, to give way for
better advice. The tumor is remarkably diminished,
& yet there is as much pain felt as when I first saw it.
I had no Sal. marin. Hispan. but have wrote to Mr
A Douglas
for some of it, and our patient is to come over from [Middleside?] 1
Sunday next for the aperient Solution.
Dr Cullen & my friend Mr Wood, & am, with sincere regard,
my Dear Sir Your most obedient humble Servant
Laing
