For Mrs Harrower
A weakness & delicacy of nerves.
As soon as her next monthly period is over let
her begin the medicines advised below.
The Electuary is to be taken to the size of a hazel
nut twice a day; an hour before dinner and between
seven & eight p.m. After each dose she is to take a
glass of water with 20 drops of the Tincture in it. If
this dose agrees well with her stomach she may take
30 drops in a larger glass of water.
These medicines are to be taken from the end of a
period for three weeks, but then intermitted till the next
[Page 2]
period is over when again a 2d course may be taken
for three weeks as before.
If during their use any costiveness come on,
take at bed time one or two of the Pills - that is to
give one easy stool without purging .
In the fourth week of the month she should take
a dose of these pills once or twice & especally towards
the end of the week whether she is costive or not, if
she is not loose.
When the period comes on, if attended with colic
pains let her take two of the Anodyne pills at bed¬
time; & if the pains return the second day, take an¬
other dose of the pills that evening.
Diet of a middling kind; only avoiding heavy
or flatulent things.
Drink, plain water -- a glass or two of red Port
well diluted, every day after dinner.
Fresh air, walking or riding. The walking must
be gentle & not long at a time. Riding best, as it will
not raise a pain of her back.
To make cold bathing useful, her head must be
shaved & the water applied there first. If she will not
do this she may try having some cold water poured upon
the small of her back, upon getting out of bed in the morning
Take one ounce of Powdered Peruvian bark, prepare half an ounce of Steel Electuary or three drachms of confect cardiac, one ounce of conserve of orange peel and a sufficient quantity of simple Syrup to make an Electuary. Label: Strengthening Electuary.
Take two ounces of Tincture of mars made according to the Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia. Label: Strengthening Tincture.
Take one and a half drachms of aloetic pill mass, made according to the Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia. Divide into 18 pills. Label: Laxative pills
Take one drachm of Thebaic Pills. Divide into twelve pills. Label: Anodyne pills.
