Mr Lionel Campbell Concerning Mrs Farquharson
As I apprehended a Diarrhœa has come on, and as it will
weaken her very much we must prevent it as well as we can.
For this purpose the Recipe №1 below, but if the Diarrhœa proves
frequent and be attended with much griping nothing will very
effectually correct it but an Opiate.
Happy to find
Her Diet just as I could wish & hope it will be continued.
I am sorry you have not mentioned any attempts being made
to Exercise – Observe what I say of it & also of Issues &
blistering in my former letter (p 95.) 1
Cannot expect the Menses till her complaints are better
& no attempts to restore them can be safely made at present.
I am clear she should wear a flannel shirt next her skin
The Cooling Mixture seems rather to abate Looseness, but if
you think it appears to increase it either give it in less
quantity or not at all
№1. Take a drachm each of Pomegranate Flowers and dried Red Roses, half-a-drachm of crushed Cinnamon, half-an-an ounce of Gum Arabic, and twelve ounces of boiling water. Steep overnight and to the strainings add two drachms of Japonic Confection and two ounces of Poppyhead Syrup. Mix. Label: Strengthening Mixture Infusion two tablespoonfulls, three or four times in the 24 hours particularly a Dose at bedtime & in the Course of the night. –––– N.B. If you have to hand either Kino Tincture or Tincture of Japanese Earth, you may wish to add half-an-ounce of one or the other to the infusion, in place of the Japonic confection.
