For Mrs Davidson
Your letter of the 5th came to my hand only since
from t four this afternoon & I am hurried so much with other
business that I can write only very shortly ~ ~
I take the Case to be ↑a↑ weakened Nervous System shewing its effects
especially in the Alimentary Canal by spasm &c ~
I think your method of Cure must be keeping the belly regular with
gentle laxatives very constantly applied. I propose a formula
below which if the stomach sustains it will certainly answer. --
But very often it does not answer for the first day or two & in the Mean
time the belly must be sollicited by the Glyster also ordered below
While this is doing the pains must be kept down by the Use of your
Anodyne Mixture but besides that I would always wish to give
a full dose of Laudanum every night at bedtime & make it into
a Small Draught by it self ~ I must leave the particular dose
to you but cannot help saying that one Dose of 30, 40 or perhaps
50 drops according to the Habits of the patient will do more
than double the quantity at Intervals. -- Your Cordial Electuary
is very proper. but you must spare her stomach as well as you can
With the same view I hope her Urine flows freely so that her stomach
may be saved from the Pills. I am obliged to stop here to night but
you may expect to hear farther by tomorrows post.- I need hardly
enjoin pains in mixing the Turpentine properly with the Glister
Take two ounces of flowers of sulphur, half an ounce of best powdered Cream of Tartar, one ounce of French prunes, half a drachm of nutmeg, a sufficient quantity of syrup of roses as that to make an electuary. Label: Laxative electuary the [bigness of a filbert?] to be taken every night and morning -
Take two drachms of chamomile flowers, two drachms of {illeg} , boil in a pound up to twelve ounces, strain and add Venetian Turpentine with the yolk of an egg {illeg} well two drachms up to four drachms, one ounce of syrup of roses {illeg} powdered clysters be given at 8 in the evening.
