Case of a Young Gentleman residing in
Zetland.
He has cuticular Eruptions which generally
begin with a heat in the hands, succeeded by
small blisters, sometimes very numerous, filled
with a transparent kind of matter. It seldom
turns of a yellow coulour or any consistency. When
the Pustules are broke the transparent Matter
that issues from them causes great Inflammation
and hardness all round them attended with
considerable pain – The Blisters that are not
broke dry up within the skin and leave the loose
skin black and hard, sometimes they spread
all over the inside of the middle and ring
fingers of the left hand till they are all one
sore and continue longer & appear oftner there
than any where else – these will continue six
or seven weeks without much alteration, after
that time they begin to better & for a fortnight
or so will be almost entirely away after which
it begins in the same way – it is only within
these three years past that it has been to such
a height – it seldom appears in any other part
of the Body but the hands & more in the left than
right ––
I wish that the account of this Case had been
a little fuller & particularly that it had in¬
formed one whether the Gentleman's Health
was in any way affected by these eruptions
being either out or in –– In the mean time
I think I know the nature of the eruption
very well & hope I can advise such a
[Page 2]
course as will be of service –
I would have the Gentleman take the
first leisure he can bestow to take some
Mercury for two or three weeks, keeping his
chamber for the whole time. The Preparation
to be employed is the Mercurial Pill taking
care that the Mercury has been well rubbed.
He should take it at first in small doses of
half a grain or a grain but increasing it by
degrees so as to keep his breath tainted or
perhaps his mouth a little sore for ten or
twelve days; but it is by no means proper at
this Season for the Mercury to go farther. After
this Course let him begin to drink a bottle
of Sarsa-decoction every day, the bottle being
made with an ounce of the Root. At the same
time with this decoction let him take every
night & morning a tea spoonfull of the
Vinum antimoniale. If this does not make
him sick the quantity may be increased as far as it
may be without making him sick. This Course
of Decoction & antimony may be continued for
two or three weeks which is enough for this
Season, but if the Ailment continues to recur
it will be proper for him to renew both Courses
in the Spring when they will have a much
better effect –.
When he is taking the Mercury if at the
same time there is any eruption upon his
hand or hands let them be anointed every
night with the bigness of a bean or a Nut of
the Mercurial ointment, taking care that it
has been made entirely without turpentine
[Page 3]
At other times when he is exposed to the Air the
application of the ointment will not be so safe.
But at other times if the eruption should be very
troublesome he may use the lotion ordered
below never using it however but for a day or
two together. In his diet he must avoid all
salted meat take fish very sparingly & avoid
drinking Spirits.
Take three ounces of Rosewater, three drachms of distilled Acetate, and a drachm of Sugar of Lead. Dissolve and strain through paper. Label: The Lotion for washing the sore parts
