For Miss Home. Berwick.
In danger of phthisis pulmonalis; therefore not easily
to be cured. As her pulse is still frequent & hard & her
spitting often tinged with blood; small bleedings suited
to her strength may be of service.
Tho blistering has been hitherto ineffectual yet I
advise a perpetual blister in her back.
To moderate her thirst & fever, frequently employ
the cooling mixture ordered below, and for her difficult
breathing & cough, use the Pectoral pills ordered below.
Abstain entirely from animal food. Live upon

milk, farinacea, roots, greens & fruit.
Her asses or mares milk in the morning is proper enough
& taking as much buttermilk as she can is no less so.
You have neglected to give her gentle exercise. Let
her take it only in the mornings or evenings: for the
mid day is now too hot.
When her sleep is much interrupted by coughing an
opiate may be necessary & you may give either the elixir
paregoricum or the Tincture Thebaic but do not employ either of
them constantly or more than is absolutely necessary.
Take three ounces of Rose water, and half an ounce each of syrup of dried rose and Spiritus vitrioli tenuis. Mix. Label: Cooling Mixture. A teaspoonful of in an ordinary wine glassful of water several times a day.
Take three drachms of thickened Balsam of sulphur and powdered root of elecampagne at a sufficient quantity as to make a mass to be divided into single pills of five grains. Label: Pectoral pills. Half every night at bedtime.
