The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

[ID:4269] From: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / To: Baron Patrick Murray (5th Lord Elibank; of Elibank) / Regarding: Baron Patrick Murray (5th Lord Elibank; of Elibank) (Patient) / 30? June? 1778? / (Outgoing)

Reply, in the form of a summary of a regimen, headed 'Lord Elibank'. Two recipes mentioned were not copied. The original of these summarised directions may have passed through an intermediary (possibly Ellibank's local practitioner), but since he lived in nearby East Lothian but was often in Edinburgh on business it has been assumed that Ellibank was the addressee.

Lord Elibank

For strengthening his Nerves the Electuary ordered below.
& after every Dose a small Cupfull of Valerian Tea. as ordered below. 1

To wash his throat several times a day with Jelly & Water
& a little Vinegar.

To relieve his Defluxion & difficulty of swallowing a
Blister between the Shoulders may be very proper and a part
of it kept open

His belly to be kept regular by Castor oil or Flor. Sulph.

Diet. Any plain meats - ↑what↑ Garden things he finds suit his
Stomach ----

A few glasses of wine evert Day Port of Claret ---
If he takes but little Port the best -- If more largely, Claret

If Ale or Strong Beer seem to have a good effect on his Belly
I have no objection to it.

Always fresh air & gentle Exercise when the weather allows.
A little walking is very allowable but I dont think his
Lordship will stand much. & therefore a Carriage

Notes:

1: The space left immediately below this entry in the casebook was presumably intended to accommodate the two recipes, but neither were copied.
