Miss Alexander
Is threatened with a disease of some danger but not
yet proceeded so far as to make me doubt of her recovery
For securing the following measures may answer
Diet entirely Milk & grain, avoiding Roots, Greens, & Gar¬
den stuff & abstaining entirely from Animal food, except
[Page 2]
a little weak broth at Dinner. Drink water or Water
Gruel Barley Water or almond Emulsions - abstaining from
all wines of Malt Liquors. Her chief care to avoid
cold & therefore be always warmly clothed & wear a flan¬
nel shirt next her skin both Day & night; wear flan¬
nel Drawers & worsted under stockings. --- Gentle
exercise serviceable, while the season continues
uncertain she should go abroad only in a carriage
but when further advances & the weather milder
better to go behind a man on horseback. Short air¬
ings are better than staying at home but they will
contribute little to the cure of her disease & for
this, necessary she should make long journies
& to any length that does not fatigue her. The best
measure is to engage in a journey for several days
together & the more the better only taking care to
avoid fatigue & cold. Few Medicines are either
necessary or proper. Proper for the strengthening
Mixture to be always at hand that it may be
taken whenever threatened with looseness & if it
at any time happens from cold or other causes tha[t]
looseness becomes considerable proper to take bes¬
ides some Paregoric Elixir at bed time. The
Pectoral Mixture should be always at hand to be
taken more or less frequently as her cough is trou¬
blesome or dry or as the spitting is more difficult
One of the Medicines is an acid Mixture of which
take a tea spoonful in a wine glass of water
not quite cold 2, 3, or 4 times in the day will
quench the thirst, preserve her appetite & lay
down any degree of fever. The other is to rem¬
ove any obstructions of the breast & render her
spitting more easy. take 3 every night at bedtime
These are proposed for the present but when the
season is somewhat advanced & that she can have
more air & exercise, she would have less occasion
for them. Against the end of May she should go the [Isle?]
[Page 3]
of Arran to drink Goat whey & that time she will
need no other Medicines but the strengthening Mixture
& Paregoric Elixir
