For Captn. Grey.
He seems in several respects better, but I am afraid of the
consequences of the obstancy of his Jaundice. Since the [Pillis?]
& Infusion do little, [surest?] try another medicine. The mil¬
lepedæ are safe & sometimes useful. The best form is the
vinum millepedatum (The) Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia Take it Bruise in a stone mor¬
tar two scruples of live Millepedæ. Pour 2 ounces Rhenish wine
upon them over night. Next morning strain the wine thro a linnen
rag squeezing the Millepedæ very strongly & let the Capt. take
this before breakfast. If this agree well with him, increase
the Millipedæ in each dose to one drachm. Take also the following
medicine.
Take half an ounce of Root of common madder. Take two drachms each of orange Peel and juniper Water Juniper. Bruise one drachm of Seeds of cardamom minor Pour on two pounds of Spanish white wine and two ounces of juniper Water combined. Macerate and strain. Label: Aperient wine. Two tablespoonfuls, twice a day an hour before dinner and Supper.
[Page 2]
Take what Exercise he can
bear & continue his Regimen formerly advised. I have no ob¬
jection to a little Geneva in water twice a day, but let the quantity
of Geneva be very moderate & the doses not frequent.
