For Mr. L. continued
Dear Sir

In the former letter I gave you my advice
about avoiding Cold & managing Diet & these are the Articles of
your Regimen which if you observe I am very confident will in
time restore you perfectly but I beg you'll consider that you
must be extremely exact & that every deviation may be hurtfull.
When one for the most part lives upon Vegetables he will have more
fever from an Ounce of Meat than a man that ordinarily
lives upon it will have from half a Pound –––– I expect you'll
think of all this & I go on now to say what assistance you may
have from Medicine. ––– While this feverishness hangs
about you if at any time it becomes Sharper with much pain
in your joints you might be ↑the↑ better for having some blood taken
from your Arm, but after the disease has Subsisted so long
the propriety of this Remedy is doubtfull & you could by no
means go far in it with the direction of Physician who could
could judge of the circumstances for the time. –––– But there
is a practice I can safely recommend you & that is whenever
any one Joint becomes harmfull & at same time a little
Swelled you should set Leeches upon it & let them bleed
moderately ––– The number of Leeches that are to be
employed
& the bleeding that is to be encouraged must be
determined by the Size of the Joint and the degree of Pain and
Swelling in it. –––– This is the only Application I can advise
to the Joints. Most of the Spirituous & Oily Applications
rather doing harm –– When your Joints are swelled

[Page 2]

with Inflammation bathing will do but better Service & may
make your Pains worse but when the pain is without any swelling
you may be relieved by bathing or fomenting & water or milk &
water is as good as any thing else. For Internal Medicines
The Antimonial Tincture is very but proper but it is
liable to be in bad condition & particularly loses by keeping.
I have f therefore Set down below a Prescription I prefer
to it –– The dose is a table Spoonfull a little befor going
to bed. If it makes you a little Sick it is somewhat better
& if it does not make you at all sick you must increase
the dose to a Spoonfull & half or two Spoonfulls ––
With Such a dose therfore as makes you a little sick
with reaching or Vomiting
you should continue for eight
or ten nights together but then you may lay it aside & take
a dose ony now & then when you find any disposition to be
feverish or to have more pains than before – I would advise
no other Medicines at present & if you are faithfull in
observing your Regimen I am perswaded you will need
no other. For other complaints besides the Rhuematic
I am positive no inward medicines are proper –– For a
month or two to come I wish you could avoid all Commerce
with the [Sex?] & this with your diet will probable remove
every complaint at least render Applications to the
part itself quite Safe –– I think there is no ground to
Suspect any Virulent Affection ––– I think I have
now Said all that is needful & I hope you'll find above
an answer to every question you have put & if I have not
been explicit enough on any point let me know ↑&↑ it shall
be immediately Supplied –
