For Mr Bowman.

Strong marks of laxity & weakness of bowels & tho the imme¬
diate consequences, griping purging &c are mended, we
cannot suppose that his bowels are yet restored to their proper
tone & he should take medicines to strengthen them & precautions
to prevent a return. For the first I have prescribed some
medicines below, an Electuary & Tincture* Of the first the bigness of

a nutmeg twice a day, before dinner & supper. each dose
is to be washed down with two tablespoonfuls of the Tincture.
These medicines should be continued at least for a fortnight.

Every day at dinner take some solid meat, but prefer the
lighter kinds & never make a full meal of Animal food & at
most an egg
but fill up with plain light soup & pudding.
No Animal food at supper, at most an egg & for the rest some
kind of grain as rice barley sago or Panada. Rather at
dinner or supper take sparingly of roots greens or fruit.
At breakfast he should avoid tea or coffee & take in place of
them a weak chocolate or Cocoa tea.

For ordinary drink should take toast water avoiding malt liquor.
After dinner & supper he may take 2 or 3 glasses of Madera
or red port but always diluted. If he find these at all
sour on his stomach, lay them aside & take brandy & water.

Exercise on horseback or in a Carriage, taking care
to avoid Cold.

Take an ounce of powdered Peruvian Bark, two drachms each of ground Cinnamon and prepared Powdered Steel, five-and-a-half drachms of Orange Peel Conserve, and enough Simple Syrup to make an Electuary. Label: Stomachic Electuary.
