For Miss Peggy Campbell
It appears very plainly from the account of the Case
that this young lady has a tendency to Consumption
but there is at the same time no circumstance which
shews this to be confirmed. & there is reason to hope
that remedies may still be employed with advantage.
The following are to me the most probable.
1. Let a little blood be taken from her arm more
or less as the state of the Pulse & of the spitting of
blood shall direct. After a little time this bleeding
should be repeated sooner or later as the same
circumstances & the pain of her breast may require.
2. Let a blister be applied on the pained part of her
breast & let a part of it be kept open as a perpe¬
tual Issue
3. Let her continue at the use of the Goat whey as long
as it is in good condition & the state of her Stom
the weather is suitable.
4. At the same time Let her have gentle exercise
on horseback especially when she has no spitting
of blood at all times let the motion be as smooth
& easy as possible.
5. She should be very much in the fresh Air but
much walking is very bad for her & especially
fast or any ways up hill.
6. Warm chambers or many bedcloaths in the night
[Page 2]
are very bad for her but at the same time she must
take great care to avoid any fresh Cold. For this
a flannel shirt next her skin both day &
night will be of great service. The flannel employed
should be very fine & thin.
7. In diet she must abstain from all kind of
Animal food & take entirely to Milk. The different kinds
of grain or what is made of it & a moderate share of
Roots or Greens. Fruit of all kinds are very pro¬
per for her. In drink she must abstain from
every thing strong whether wine Malt liquors
or any thing spirituous. Her ordinary drink
may be plain water, water gruel Barley water
or Almond Emulsion.
8. The medecines proper for her are ordered below.
The pills are to be taken regularly twice a day, about ½ or an
Hour before dinner & supper. But the Electuary is to
be taken at any time when the Cough or tickling which
raises it are troublesome and especially at bedtime
or on first lying down.
Take a scruple of Balsam of Tolu and two scruples of white lump-sugar. Rub together, try, then add a drachm each of prepared millipedes and Gum Ammoniac; half an ounce of Liquorice Extract, and enough Gum Arabic paste to make a mass to be divided into pills of four grains each. Label: Pectoral Pills. Three to be taken twice a day, washing them down with a cup of Lintseed Tea.
Take two ounces of Spermaceti Decoction and half an ounce of white lump-sugar. Rub together, try, then add an ounce of Gum Arabic paste, and half an ounce each of Elderberry juice and Liquorice Extract, and enough hot water as to soften. Strain the extract and make an Electuary. Label: Pectoral Electuary. The bigness of a bean or small hazelnut to be swallowed leisurely when the Cough is troublesome.
