Kilconquhar March 28th. 1789
Saturday near 10 oClock A.M.
I have had no letter
from you since the 21st. instant- I wrote a report
of Mr. Bethunes Case on Thusday last, all the
Symptomes at that time were favourable
to a wish except some degree of Cough & Breathing
more laborious at time & less Urine pass'd (the
preceeding night between Wednesday Evening &
Thursday Morning) than what had been for some
time before- Since Thursday Urine upon the whole
rather diminishd some times a little sediment.
no Drought, Coughs still from time to time, Diffi¬
culty of Breathing returns at times last night
especially attended with considerable anxiety
about the præcordium which made him pass a
very bad night- This morning Saturday, Before
getting out of Bed Pulse 104 strong & forcable

was warm thro' the night said he would have
sweated freely could he have kept still. Not¬
standing of all the favourable Symptomes
continuing the same as in Thursdays report
yet from the affection about the Chest returning
rather a diminished quantity of Urine for two or
three days past ↑the state of his pulse↑ makes me dread the probability
of a watery effusion in the Torax- at half past
Seven this morning got the Electuary and has
now half past nine produced 2 or 3 copious watery
stools- The squills does not seem to have any
effect upon the Kidnies as yet the half grain
still affect his Bowels so that only one grain has
been given in the day which commonly goes off
with a kind of natural Stool- Mr. Bethunes Limbs
this morning nearer their natural size that at any
former period of the Disease I am with much Respect
