For M.r Crawfurd of Morpeth
As Mr Crawfurd’s ailments were owing to a violent cause
and have now subsisted for a long time they must be
difficult to mend, but we hope that time and pains
may still do a great deal for him - The Goat whey
was very properly advised for him, but it has not
done so much, that while the season is passing over
we can advise him to persist in it, we think it
would be of more advantage for him to enter upon
a Journey and continue it for some weeks, travelling
slowly in a carriage and making Journeys from
thirty to fourty post miles every day. -- During
this Journey he may take the Infusion of Bark
with a dose of his Acid drops twice a day, and at
bed time he may take three, four or five of the
pectoral pills also ordered below. He may also
continue to take either before or after his first
sleep the anodyne he has been in use to take
for some time past – We think it will
be proper for him also to have the perpetual
blister in his back continued, but the discharge
[Page 2]
should be kept moderate – If Costiveness should require a
Remedy we think the most proper may be either a little
Caster oil or an Electuary of the Cream of Tartar and lenitive
the one or other to be taken in the morning. - During
the Journey his diet may be much the same as it has
been. He may take a little light animal food at Dinner
and if he can make up his meal with pudding and
vegetables we should like it better --- Neither wine,
Malt liquors nor any kind of strong drink we
think proper for him, the most proper is water,
boiled and cooled again, water gruel, barley water and
such like. – We need hardly say that during the
proposed Journey he should carefully avoid being
exposed to any wet or colds nor need we say that
tho’ we have spoke only of a Journey of some weeks
if he finds the benefit from it we expect he should
continue it as long as the season will allow. ✍
Take 2 drachms of finely ground Peruvian Bark. Having added a little water, blend in a marble mortar for half an hour, then gradually add up to a pint of water. Place back in a glass vessel, stirring for eight hours, then finally strain through paper and label: Strengthening Infusion.
Take a drachm each of Elecampane and Elder, 2 drachms of coarse Balsam of Sulphur, and enough Gum Arabic paste to make a mass to be divided into pills of 4 grains each. Label: Pectoral Pills.
