Dunstaffnage 22d. April 1785

Dear Sir

I think the continued Journal of
Miss Campbell's case, which I sent you last, concluded about
Midday on Friday the 8th. Current -- I now again trouble you with
the remainder of it, which you will please communicate to Doctor
Cullen --- 'till within these two days I thought we were in a very fa¬
vourable train, & I hope we shall still be so -- she once or twice felt,
she said, hungry, & eat a small bit of Bisket --

Before 8 o'Clock p.m. Friday 8th., being more pained in
the stomach, took 120 drops Liquid Laudanum --- About 11 oClock p.m. the fits & spasm
on the
throat returned, took twenty grains of Musk --

Saturday 9th. soon after 1 o'Clock a.m. the fits & spasm on the throat went off,
weak, or Languid & sick all day --- at 2 p.m. took 120 drops Liquid Laudanum --
About 4 p.m. the upper parts sweated but did not continue long ---
About 8 p.m. the fits returned, with a lightness in the throat, before
9 o'Clock twenty grains of Musk were given -- At 11 p.m. the fits stopt --
The fits tonight were very weak & at intervalls of near half an hour
having more the Appearance of Deliquium than spasm --

Sunday 10 th. slept about an hour this morning - still weak
pained & sick -- about 9 a.m. took 120 drops Liquid Laudanum -- at 2 p.m. stomach
easier - head, Urethra &c. more pained -- at 7 p.m. pain in the stomach
begining to encrease took twenty grains of Musk ---- No fits ----

Monday 11 th. at 2 a.m. no fits, & being pretty easy, took two
Laxative pills, which operated thrice before 10 o'Clock a.m. but no fæces -
concealing this effect, she of herself took a third pill, suspecting there
was something had been long lodged in the bowels, which by 2 p.m.
brought away at two motions a large Quantity of fœtid Bilious
fæces of a Natural consistance -- Was very weak afterwards & fainted
frequently, with a restless uneasyness all over her, which could not
properly be called pain; took 100 drops Liquid Laudanum -- soon after she grew easy

[Page 2]

free of all pain, excepting a little in the head and said she had not
been so well for Months before --

Tuesday 12th. slept some last night -- continuing easy - took
twenty drops of Musk in the Morning --- I was this forenoon called away
& could not return before Saturday Night -- I found in all that
time she had no fits, but was often much pained in the stomach, &
once, for about ten minutes, had the spasm in her throat -- she every
Night took at least 125 drops Laudanum generally more, & some times even
200 drops & in the Mornings twenty grains of Musk. ---

Saturday 16th. This forenoon she took a Common Injection
with effect -- On my return at 10 p.m. finding her more than
usually pained in the stomach, gave her 150 drops Liquid Laudanum & being still
pained, before Morning she took 100 drops more --

Sunday 17th. About 8 a.m. took twenty grains of Musk - complained
of headach, but otherwise tollerably easy -- towards evening no sleep
& headach encreased -- at 7 p.m. Stomach very much pained, with
what she calls the stitchy pain in it, took 80 drops Liquid Laudanum & at 8 p.m.
took twenty grains of Musk the spasm having seized her throat as bad as ever
& continued for about an hour, during which, & for about an hour
after, the fits were very frequent, but so very weak as to have the
appearance of fainting --

Monday 18th. The headach & pain in the stomach continuing
at 3 a.m. took 80 drops Liquid Laudanum -- At 1 o'Clock p.m. stomach easier
headach severe & very sick -- About 4 p.m. began to sweat --
at 10 p.m. sweat beginning to dry up took twenty-three grains of Musk
& 130 drops Liquid Laudanum in it --

Tuesday 19th. sweat continued all night, but very little
on her lower extremities -- slept none -- This Morning took
four Laxative pills which by 10 p.m. procured Two small
Bilious stools, before 12 p.m. took twenty-five grains of Musk with 150 drops Liquid Laudanum

Wednesday 20th Much headach -- no sleep -- at 5 a.m.
stomach very uneasy took 100 drops Liquid Laudanum all day sick & Languid -- at 8 p.m.

[Page 3]

took twenty-five grains of Musk with 160 drops Liquid Laudanum -- pained in the stomach
& limbs -- at 11 p.m. the fits with the shakings returned,
but not quite so violent as formerly --- At 12 p.m. fits & shakings
stopt, but severely pained in the stomach & head - with Borbor¬
igmy
& some faintings or rather very weak fits - refused to
take an Injection, but took 160 drops Liquid Laudanum ---

Thursday 21st. at 4 a.m. pains much the same took
100 drops Liquid Laudanum all day very sick, Languid & disposed to slumber
but no sleep - headach very violent -- some fits & shakings
but rather less Violent -- the smallest thing, even the falling
of a tea spoon upon the Carpet, or the sudden admission of
more light from the Window, agitates her & brings on the
fits -- between 9 & 10 p.m. took twenty-five grains of Musk & 180 drops
head breast & arms inclined to sweat --

Friday 22 at 1 this Morning - sweat as before -
& shakings very frequent - headach very violent - stomach
much pained & stitched affecting her breathing after every
fit, took 200 drops Liquid Laudanum -- about 6 a.m. no better, took 100
drops Liquid Laudanum - very sick, & much pained - fits & shakings very
frequent & severer - has slept none for several Nights past.
pulse from 65 to 75 - yesterday it was above 80, & skin very
hot, & for part of one day, was as slow as 50 - The stranguary
for a few days past has been very painful, but she could not
be moved into the Warm bath, as it was to that complaint
it gave releif -- ---- I must Observe that the person from
whom you get the Musk, as he takes a good price, ought to
give good Measure, for the 4 drams last sent, upon my weighing
them, came just 40 grains short - none could be lost in the
carriage, & I beleive my weights are just --
