10 in the morning Wooler April 16th 1784 --
Dear Sir
Mr. Handasyde having Signified to me Your Desire
of being Acquainted with his Situation, I Embrace this Opportunity
to inform You how he has gone on Since his leaving Edinburgh
He got to Wooler on Thursday last Was A Week, Extremely fatigued with
his Journey, and had been so Ill upon the Road as to Alarm them very Much
The Swelling Greatly Increasd all over the Body & Face and the Pain
in the Bowells Violent and frequent - Stools Copious - often, and very
Acrid -- took his Anodyne Drops on Thursday Evening - yet had a very
bad Night - Rested in Bed all Friday from Fatigue, Pain &c much
the same, On Saturday Morning took the Sweating Boluss, and
followed Exactly Your Directions -- Sweat pretty freely some hours
was very Easy and lay Composd and Comfortable all Day - Stools as
often but not so Copious, and less Pain in the Making - no particular
Change in Making Water - on Sunday began to take his Diuretik
Infusion - took it three times that Day - and four times the Day
following, little or no Effect as to his Water - but Continued more
Easy in the Bowells - on Tuesday Morning he repeated the Boluss
now 25 grains - the first only A Scruple - Sweat more Profuse, Quite
[Page 2]
Easy as to Pain the Whole Day - Stools as frequent, but Small and with
with some Degree of Tenesmus, Water Making not Increas'd any¬
thing to Speak of, but thinks Rather so than Diminishd, has Remaind
Pretty Easy as to Pain Ever since - after Tuesday; Sweat - his Hands &
Face very much fallen, his Spirits better than Usual - Appetite
very good, but I fear he is Obstinate in persisting to Eat too much
at once & of things Prejudicial, so that if under Your Authority A
Diet Could be Prescribed both as to Quantity & Quality - if that is
of any Consequence, he might be Induced to Abide by it ------
Continued on the Intermediate Days his Diuretick Infusion but without
much Effect - On this day Repeats his Boluss - I have just now
Seen him, he is pretty Easy - and in Every Respect as before Described
He has not been able to go out since his Return the Weather has been
very Unfavorable - and I think in his Bodily Strength he is
much Weaker -- but Ever since his first taking the Boluss
The Pain of his Bowells has never been so Violent as to make him
Cry out - The Vomiting also is Entirely Ceasd Ever since that time
altho he has frequently Loaded his Stomach with Food, I think
this is all that has Occurr'd worth Your Notice - If any thing farther
is to be done, I shall Esteem it a favour to Receive Your Command
in the Interim Remain with Mr. Cokaynes best Respect
[Page 3]
Dear Sir
Your Obliged Humble Servant
W Cokayne
He has taken his Anodyne drops Every Night Except when Sweating
not so much for Rest as to Mitigate the Purging - but it Yet Remains
in the State Described ----
