I was on monday last call'd to see a Mr Watson
Carr of this place aged 50 of a Plethoric habit who
about three weeks ago was seized with a fit of the
Asthma a Complaint to which through the
whole of his life he has been very liable espe¬
cially from cold which was the cause of the present
attack ---- When visiting him I found his
breathing to be very difficult and laborious
attended with a severe cough threatning suf¬
focation and little expectoration what he spit¬
ted up was a viscid mucus scarcely soluble
Doctor Cullen

in water --- His complexion was florid and
his pulse full and hard -- Six ounces of blood
was taken from his Arm that night and the same
quantity next day --- a vomit had been given
before I saw him I afterwards ordered a blister
to be applied to his breast and prescribed neutral
salts in large doses adding small quantitys of the
Emetic Tartar His belly was also kept open
by frequent laxative Glysters --- Notwithstanding this
method of treatment I found the complaints very
little alleveated - last night he had a considerable
degree of fever accompanied with a slight de¬
lirium the former was much abated this mor¬
ning and the latter had entirely gone off -- I
[Page 3]
proposed consulting you but as the case ap¬
peared hazardous from the difficulty of breathing
threatning suffocation I have order'd a large
blister to be put to the back from which if he
has no relief I shall begin the use of Antimony
in a more liberal manner having observed that
a free perspiration always eases him com¬
plaints.
I am sorry that the situation of this familly does
not admit of a larger fee I shall however endeavour
to compensate for this by consulting you in as
many cases as I possibly can. The friends
always expect to see your letters -- I have the
honour to be with great regard and esteem
Your much obliged humble servant
