Ladykirk December 1. 1783
Sir
I will be very much obliged to you
to take into consideration the following Case
and to send me your advice concerning it.
A Lady between thirty and forty years of
age who never was married had been for
some Periods rather subject to a more co¬
pious flow of the Menses than ordinary &
about the middle of last June was siezed
with symptoms of Leucorrhœa -- For two
or three succeeding Periods the Menses in¬
creased in quantity, and at the same time
the Leucorrhœa became more constant &
attended with Complaints of the Stomach
Debility and Pain across the Loins. At this
time I was consulted and gave her an Electu¬
ary of two ounces Bark & one ounce of the
Limat. Martis ppt. made into form with
Conserv. Menth. sativæ but as she had a
dislike to the Electuary I gave her two scru¬
ples of the Bark & half a drachm of the Lim.
Martis ppt. made into a powder & repeated
three times in the Day. After using the above
for several weeks together with the cold
Bath the Menses decreased in quantity
the Leucorrhœa abated, the debility went off
[Page 2]
and she recovered her Appetite. About this
time I changed the Limaturæ Martis præ¬
paratæ for Allum as she tired of the former
or rather was some way or other prejudiced
against it. -- But a disagreable circumstance
happening in the Family eight or twelve days
ago threw her into considerable Agitation and
a larger flow of the Menses coming on has a¬
gain induced Leucorrhœa with its symptoms
as bad almost as at first. I had ordered In¬
jections of cold water & a more nourishing
diet than ordinary with a little Wine, but the
Injections were neglected. Upon the whole her
present symptoms are Leucorrœa in con¬
siderable quantity & constant, which was pre¬
ceeded by a copious Menstruation, much un¬
easiness and weakness across the Loins and
very considerable Debility in general. Her
want of Appetite not quite so much as some
time ago -- There is also eight or ten days be¬
fore the Irruptions of the Menses a very dis¬
agreable pain in the Stomach, but which al¬
ways went off without fomenting or the use of
an Opiate hitherto. It may be necessary to add
that her habit was always slender and irritable
& that she has indulged considerably in Tea &
Coffee ---- If however after what I have said
you may wish to see her, I dare say tho the

Season is unfavourable for travelling she will
obey soon. -- Whatever you prescribe for her I
hope you will inforce its proper continuance
by taking notice of it in your Letter. I am
with very much respect
