Dr Sir
When Mr. Fleming told me that he
was obliged to be in Edinburgh in a few days,
I advised him to consult you, for a complaint
he has had for about two months, & that however
slight it might appear at present, it might be
attended with troublesome consequences. It is a
difficulty of getting down the food into the Stomach
from a straitness of a particular part of the Œso¬
phagus, he feels likewise a soreness at that
part upon pressing down the aliment. The
place he points out is about a hands breadth
above the pit of the Stomach. He thinks himself
that is chiefly a windy complaint, but I wish it
may not be a topical affection. I have given
twice or thrice Calomel at night, & Jalop
next morning, which is the only medicine he
[Page 2]
has used. Since he first noticed this uneasiness
which was when retching after having taken
a dose of Salts, & the inclination to vomiting
very strong The difficulty of swallowing or
pressing down the aliment & of soreness at the
part have continued nearly in the same state.
I ever am with great regard
Dr Sir
Your most obedient Servant
