[ID:2124] From: Mr James Bon / To: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / Regarding: Mr William Fergusson (Ferguson; of Auchinsoul) (Patient) / 5 January 1782 / (Incoming)
Letter from James Bon, surgeon, concerning the brother of Lieutenant Fergusson of Auchensoul. He has suffered fits since boyhood, for which he had received Cullen's advice at that time. On reaching adulthood, however, they have recurred and are becoming more severe. There is a curious reference, 'But when he became a man and entered into active life (his, is a country lif[e)] he became more irregular in his none naturals'.

I am directed by Lieut. Fergusson
of Auchensoul [Welch Fusiliers?] Regiment to acquaint you about
a young ↑Man↑ his brother, whome you saw, or was
consulted about some years ago, when he was a Boy
He had at that time some kind of fits, for which
you –– 1st advised him to use the Cold Bath with
proper precautions. ––––
2d. He was to take every morning after coming out
of the Bath, and before dinner a dose of a Cephalic
Electuary, composed of Bark, Valerian, & Lime,
the dose to be increased from the size of a Bean
to a Nutmeg.
3d. Every night he was to take one of the Pilulæ Cæruleæ and to increase the number to the quantity
that had some effect on his stomach, or Guts.
4th. You directed him particularly as to his diet,
which was to be chiefly, Milk, grain, and Water.
5th. He was directed very particularly as to his Exercise.
And during a course of these for two, or three Weeks
if he was not better, they were to be laid aside.
[Page 2]
He followed your prescriptions very clossly, as I
understand, and got quite well for the time, and
then discontinued them, But when he became a
man and entered into active life (his, is a country lif[e)]
he became more irregular in his none naturals
and then his fits returned again – and in spring
last he aplyed to me for a renewal of his Medicines
which seemd for a while at first to have the effect of
mitigating his complaints, but afterwards altho
he paid (as I am informed, for he lives at a considerabl[e]
distance from me) strict attention to rule and
increased the doses very much, yet his dissorder
increases, and he is become more frequently attack[ed]
with it in the day time. ––––
Now I am desired to ask you the favour of your
advice, what farther may be tried, and to inform yo[u]
that if you judge it necissary, the young man
will go to Edinburgh, that you may have an
opportunity of seeing him. Beging an answer
