I ought to Apologise for not sooner acknowledging
the receipt of your very acceptable & attentive Letter - but
that I Conceived it to be a greater Compliment to you, to write
after having tried the Effect of your prescription & mode of
Living, which I have done, & I have the pleasure to Inform
you that I have found myself much better since & many
of my Complaints are much relieved some quite removed
before I begun your Medicines, I was even much worse than
when I wrote you, & some very disagreeable symptoms & to
me alarming ones, were added to my former uneasy sensations
particularly, flying pains about my Sides a disagreeable sense
of something in my Breast that I endeavoured to get up by
[humming?] &exerting disagreeable Efforts for this purpose,
at times a tough Phlegm came up in these attempts, & often
previously accompanied with a [Huryling?] (as we call it) in my
[Page 2]
throat & Breast I therefore began a Course of your Medicines
was obliged to wear an under Waistcoat of Callico, & woollen
Socks, rode about every day on horseback & in a few weeks
I desired great Benefits from the united powers - I still
Continue much better, & indeed almost quite well of these
uneasy sensations about my throat; the palpitation of
my heart also, & the depression of Spirits which generally
accompanied it when violent are much less frequent than
before, & in short I feel myself quite another Man.
I still use as much Exercise as is Compatible with my business
& ↑as↑ the Weather permitts, even in this inclement season, when
all Nature seems in a State of [Iape?] by the powerful Effects of
an Intense frost, & a deep Snow, I make it a rule to walk out
every day in defiance of the Cold, or rather to [Imun?] myself
to it, & feel its bracing Qualities. I lately took a ride out on
horseback to Kelso, upon some Business at Hendersyde, which I
believe Contributed not a little to the Confirmation of my health
[Page 3]
the Weather being then Mild & riding much about for about
ten days with the Change of Air & produced a very favourable
alteration in my Spirits - Accept my best thanks
for the obliging Offer you made me of sending a Chamber
Bathing Vessell, but I do not find any Occasion for it
at present & I got a long Oval Vessell made last summer
to hold me at full Length, which answers very well in
mild Weather and it Stands out of doors, & in Winter as I mention'd
in my {illeg} or indeed at any time did Bathing agree with me
probably indeed owing to the water being too Cold at first, I
therefore mean to pursue the directions by making the Water
in my Bathing Tub of a proper temperature for a few trials
when I began. We have lately got here a Lot of very
Elegant new Baths built {illeg} upon the plan of the
Medicinal Baths at York, & Kensington, they have several
different Vapour Baths, one they call a Buxton Bath, & very
good Warm & Cold Baths finished to a high taste -
Mrs Waldie begs to Join me in best Wishes; with many thanks
for your polite Attention I am
Your most Obedient Servant
