I was favoured with yours on 7th,
and Am sorry to find that you entertain so
bad an Opinion of My friends Case. From
our leaving ↑Edinburgh↑ till Thursday he continued pret¬
ty much in the same situation you saw him, when
I thought I could perceive a very remarkable
hardness in his pulse, and on Friday morning
the Hæmoptoe returned in a very considera¬
ble degree, in consequence of which with
consent of Dr Douglas eight Ounces of blood
were taken from his Arm, which as usual
was covered with a thick Buff, at the
same time the squill Pills were omit¬
ted, and an Electury of Conserve of Roses
and Nitre given along with the Pectoral
Decoction and Linctus, by the use of which,
the spitting of blood was stopped for some
time, but returned this morning with a severe

fitt of coughing. The hoarseness still continues
and the Sweatings about his Head, Neck, and
Shoulders have become more profuse, and yes¬
terday he complained of [groupings?] at different
times. As the Hæmoptoe has alarmed him
very much I Am desired to make a report
of it ↑to↑ you and ask your further advice in this
very untoward case. hitherto he does not com¬
plain of pain of Breast or sides. With great
respect.
