Montrose 9 December 1779.
Sir

This will be presented to you by Mr.
Law Shipmaster of this place who goes to consult with
you.

He was 'till January last very healthy
when he was attacked with violent pains in his intestines
attended with flatus, costiveness and want of Appetite, which
have continued with him ever since, but now & then having
intervals of ease for some weeks together. At present
the returns are irregular, fully as frequent, rather more
severe, and now accompanied with lowness of spirits, and
a peculiar dulness of his Eyes, which have a Yellowish
tinge, as also on his face round them, especially when
the pains are on him: he has been at times subject to
haemorrhages from the nose, sometimes preceded by head¬
ach
, which it never failed to relieve: his Urine is
very high coloured, his stools of a natural colour.

At the beginning of his complaints he
tells me he took some Bitters infused in brandy and

also the Vinum Aloeticum in small doses, without effect,
otherwise than the last by keeping his belly regular.

When he applied to me. (taking his case to be a
weakness of the intestines) I have him a laxative Solution
of Tart. Solub., Sal Glaub. Sal Hyspan with a small pro¬
portion of Chalyb. which gave great relief for a
considerable time: I also advised riding on horseback &
to wear a Flannel Shirt; to dinner he took some Animal
food & two or three glasses of Port. wine. However, his com¬
plaints have recurred. As to other particulars I beg
leave to refer You to himself. I am with the
highest respect

Sir
Your Most Obedient
humble Servant.
M: Hunter

I beg leave to inform you that my Father
died about ten days ago of an Anasarca, probably the
effects of repeated Venesections for the relief of his
head.
