Doctor Cullen
Dear Sir

This will
probably be delivered to you by Mr: Wm: Mc:Dowal
who intends to apply to you for advice; He
is a worthy young Man of this place, & his
Life is of great Consequence to his Friends
& as thay have been anxious to get the best
Assistance for him that could be procured
for him I have therefor recommended it
to him to apply to you. ----

About five years ago he had a most
severe attack of pains & seeming Inflama¬
tion of his
Bowels but I did not then
attend him so can not say what Medi¬

cines he then got or what Regimen he
was afterwards put on. ---

About two years ago he applyd to me on
account of a very troublesome Itchyness over
most of his body
which did not appear
much upon the Skin till after it was rubbed
& then the Skin seem'd to rize or hove up
in a small degree & to become of a pale
red Colour
which was chiefly troublesome
after any Violent Exercise. He also complained
of Costiveness which has been, since, almost
habitual. -- For the above I chiefly recom¬
mended the Decoctum Lignorum with as much
Tartar Emetick disolved in it as his Stomach
could easily bear & laxatives ↑with Calomel in them↑ intermixed in
consequence he became better & I only gave
him a Box of Pills to take as often as he
had occasion, & to be moderate as to his diet

& to use regular & constant Exercise but I
am sorry to say he had not been so attentive
to the above as he ought, about ↑six weecks or↑ a Month ago
during the warmest weather we then had,
he was attacked with a hæmoptoe in the
night Time after having eat & drunk hear¬
tily at Supper. ---- He was immediately Bled
got a Dose of the Sal Glauberi Verum, took the Elixir Vitrioli in cold water & was afterwards bled
again, Blistered on the Breast, & used constan¬
tly Doses of sal nitre Cream: Tartar: & Salis
Russellense; he got free of it, & I recommended
it to him to go to Moffat in order to try
Goats Whey, Drink the heartfell Spaw, & to use
moderate Exercise with Abstemiousness. -- he has
since had a return & I make no doubt will
safely you fully as to all particulars. - I remain
with Respect & Esteam
