I received your favour of the 11
January & am extremely happy to find
your sentiments agree with the
conjecture I proposed in my last.
Mr Irwin, with respect to the general
state of his health, is much the
same.
His legs continue nearly
free from swelling, but the itching
is still violent attended with more
eruption on his shoulders, sides &
hips. During last week his Spirits
were very much depressed, nay
he was apprehensive of an almost
[Page 2]
immediate dissolution.
He has been recommended to
take 2 grams of Calomel in the form
of a Pill twice a week. I endeavoured
to dissuade him from it particular¬
ly at this season & till we had
your opinion; but being anxious
for relief he was resolved to make
a trial. The effects were such as I
foresaw. His heat was increased
& so was his pulse 10 in a minute.
A looseness likewise was the
consequence. He only took two
Pills & when opportunity permits he
begs you would let him know if
there is any reason to expect good effects
from any mercurial preparation
With wishes for your health & happiness
I am Dear Sir yours &c.
