I am now to own receipt of your very kind Obliging
letter of the 12 ult. / in answer to mine of the 3th. December / with a
recepi; when received I was taking things directed by Dr Fothergill - I
informed him of your puscription - which; he desired, if Id will not find
nenefit from his to omit them, & take yours so long as they agreed
with me -- I began on Tuesday last & took yours 4 times, they rather
promoted a lax & thought the Itching rather abated, but I was so very
low, weak & faint I durst not continue - indeed Dr. F. advised that
when I found such Effects to forbear: & ordered me to take some Milk
& Water, in a morning, Warm, with testaceous powder, he prescribed:
and some Camomile Tea with orange peel & two or three Cloves as a
Bitter before dinner which I have begun with this morning ---
He says he Should be much inclined to Omit Medicine for a Short
time if yours does not Succeed --- If what I am now doing do not
Answer, I intend to omit all medicine some time & then begin with
yours in a Small degree which I believe likely to help me by promoting
perspiration & moderate laxativeness. --- indeed my case is much
as advised you, only I am weaker-- however, I had a letter this morning
from Dr. Heysham, (who sees Fothergills powders made up, & is now -
going a week to Visit his friends at Lancaster) "you may take it for
"granted from me, that you have at present no dangerous Symptom
be not uneasy, or make yourself unhappy. ---
Tho' my present complaints be chiefly that Itching & heat, yet
as I am much fallen away the continuance must be fatall!
Inclosed I send you two Edinburgh Notes, both dated 2 february 1774
to Thomas Steuart or bearer for each one Guinea which I hope
will go Safe & be acceptable ------ and am
