Baledmund 21st Augst 1778
Sir

I wrote you sometime ago of my having
left Faskally & taken this Place & likewise the State of my
Health at that time but I suppose the Letter has miscarried
as I received no Answer. I therefore trouble you again to let
you know that I cannot get quit of the Cough which although
it has been almost gone two or three times has always
returned and sometimes with double Violence; this, without any
Pain in my Breast further than what I have often experienced
from a common Cold. I spit very thick yellow Matter in the
morning & about a fourthnight ago had a severe natural
purging & Puking since which time I think my Stomach
rather easier. My Hand is now very steady & my Eyesight
little or nothing affected. I wish to know if applying a
Blister or a Burgundy Pitch Plaister betwixt my Shoulders
would not be a mean of removing the Cough or if you will

[Page 2]

allow me to try the Bark which I took at Gibraltar in decoction
with a little styptick tincture & from which I felt great
Benefit to my Stomach by the strengthening which the Cough
might perhaps be removed for I believe the Goat whey by itself
will not bring it about notwithstanding I have it in the
greatest Perfection possible at this time of year which was
a principal motive in my leaving Faskally.

If you advise this I can have Bark made up at Dunkeld.
I beg to hear from you & am

Sir
your most obedient
humble Servant
Ja Maxwell
