Do you remember a person of the Name
of Irving, at Mrs Mcclellands near the Society port
whom you favoured with your advice March 1777
& then applyd to you for one asthmatick ↑complaint↑ which you
were pleased to call a cater on the Lungs you
was in hopes when I left Edinbourg the warm weat¬
her would have bein of some service to remove
my Complaints, but it was quite the reverse am
much worse in the hot weather, all the winter I had
three regular fits of asthma every day, and as
many through the night they were sometimes a little
variation as to the times of the fit coming on, nor does
it come on suddenly but works up the breast a long
time before I can raise the Cough to bring the film
up
which is most distressing it continue one hour
mostly, some times an hour and half, then I used

to be pritty easy for tow or three hours, and my appetite
Good. Since the month of March I have taken
a very different turn, the quantity of film does not
come away as usual but rest on the breast for
perhaps six weeks all that time my voice is
quite altered
; then all at once am seized with
with a most violent Cough and spiting, which
carrys off the shortness of breathing but then I loose
all appetite
, till the Cough stops which ↑is↑ only
removed by blistering, though I am loth to stop the
Cough
, as it stops the spiting also, in about three
weeks time the film gathers and brings on the
shortness of b↑r↑eathing
which is still more distress.
I have mostly grate wakeness and pains through
all my limbs and an extreme sinking of my
spirits
which I take to be nervous for I have
been long afflicted with nervous Complaints

have been obliged to take forty drops of Laudanum
every night this long time, to procure a little Sleep

[Page 3]

the want of rest has reduced me to a Shadow
before I could b[be pr]vailed on to take Laudanum
the grate fault I have to it makes me very Costive
my Good Doctor I do not expect you ore any
Human person can recover me to health, all I
look for is a little, temporary relief, when I take
that violent Shortness of breathing if you think
necessary for me to come in to Edinbourg pleas
