Case of A B.

The Patient, now about 28 years old, was at the
age of about 14 years old, early in a morning, after
coming newly out of bed, seised with a giddiness
in his head, which occasioned his falling down &
made him cry, but was not then the least Con¬
vulsed
; nor can he say at what period he was
first seised with that complaint, not being
sensible of showing any other trouble than the
swimming in his head till between the age of
15 & 16, when he was observed one morning,
when ↑while↑ in bed, foaming at the mouth, & it is believed
a little convulsed; upon when a surgeon was
called for, who imputed it to nothing but the
Patients being in some frightfull dream.
He was at this time apprenticed to a [lawyer?]
by whom he was kept pretty close at
business, & with whom he remained till the age
of 20; during which time he was seised with the
swimming in his head pretty frequently, but
cannot be certain of the progress of his convul¬
sive complaint
or fits during that period –– but
having left Edinburgh & gone to the Country at that
age where he was kept [close writing?], the
giddiness in his head as well as the Convulsive
Complt. seemed to be encreasing for some years,
having been observed affected with the latter at

[Page 2]

different times when in bed, In which situation he has
been told, the fits were often so Violent as
to alarm persons in an adjoining room. His
Complaints appear to have undergone very
little change till between two & three
years ago that he was first troubled with a
dry cough & straitness in his breast –– At
this time by the advice of a surgeon
he began to use Valerian Tea, & a Mix¬
ture made up chiefly, he thinks of
Jesuits Bark. He had at sametime
an Issue put in one of his arms. By
the use of these means he believes the
swimming in his head became rather
less frequent, & his Convulsive complaint
he was told did not appear quite so
Violent as formerly. He also got a
good deal the better of the Cough. The
Issue has been kept open ever since &
continues to discharge as much now as at
first, & he has also used the Valerian
broth
, frequently, but did not continue
the use of the Mixture above two Months.
He has of late been troubled with the swim¬
ming in his
head rather more frequently
than before & has also had some returns
of his Convulsive complaint, which now as well

as from the beginning has allways at¬
tacked him in bed, one single instance
excepted a few months ago, when having
fallen asleep in his Chair he was seised
with it & fell off his seat. This he imputed
to too much drink & want of sleep the
night before. – His Cough still continues
especially in the Mornings when he spits
less or more Phlegm. – He is for the
most part seised with his Convulsive dis¬
order
once a month – In winter not
quite so often, but in the beginning of
summer & end of harvest rather more
frequently – He is frequently seised with
a second fit in an hour after the first
& is that day troubled with the swimming
in his
head much more than ordinary. The
Patients business obliges him to write
a good deal, & to give pretty close
application at times; & in the course of his
business, tho inclined to sobriety & temper¬
ance, is sometimes induced to drink
rather freely. These particulars he thinks
proper to mention, as on each of these
occasions he is much more readily seised
with his several Complaints than when he is
able to abstain from drink & to indulge

himself with moderat exercise.

It may be further observed that
in the earlier period of his life he was
much troubled with an Outstriking [Inflammation?]
over the crown of his head & with frequent
bleeding at his nose, with the last of which
he is still troubled at times. –– He is at
al times troubled with an Inflammation &
Outstriking of his Lips, especially with
frosty weather. ––
