[ID:1170] From: Mr James Ewart / To: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / Regarding: Mrs Margaret Ewart (Christie) (of Mulloch, Mullock) (Patient) / October 1775 / (Incoming)

Loose document describing the case of 'Mrs Ewart of Mullock aged about 58'. She has nursed nine children and the "Catamenia left her several years ago without any apparent alteration in her constitution' (i.e. she passed the menopause), but 'about two years ago her health has been upon the decline which she herself imputes to a sudden shock her mind sustained by a piece of disagreeable Intelligence'. An enclosed note on medicines is mentioned but untraced. This document could itself have been an enclosure but no cover-letter has been identified.

lived regularly, and in her habit was rather
inclined to corpulancy. The Catamenia left her
several years ago without any apparent alteration
of her constitution - About two years ago her
health has been upon the decline which she
herself imputes to a sudden shock her mind sustain'd
by a piece of disagreeable Intelligence - her First
complaints were ↑an↑ Oedematous Swelling of her legs
and Feet, attended with some degree of feverishness
and loss of appetite - Doctor Gordon being called
prescribed medicines of which a note is inclosed -
These she continued to take some time along with
an astringent bath for her legs, composed of water
salt and allum - The swelling gradually decreased
and she appeared to have recovered her former
State of health but not strength complaining
frequently of a feebleness in her limbs ---
From the beginning of last Spring her weakness
became universall - her body began visibly
to sloop, she lost her Flesh, her habit became
delicate - her nerves irritable, and her mind
Easily affected - Subsequent to this, she took a
Pain in her side attended with a tickling Cough -
