Case of Mr Patrick Meliss Submitted to
Doctor Cullen for Advice


Aged 26 Married about 3 years ago subject to
a hoarsness & Cough frequently from his Infancy.
About 2 Years ago was more violently affected therewith
then Usual attended with a slight fever since which
time he has had the Cough better & worse at times but
never entirely gone- Last winter 177¾ it became more
Violent attended with feverishness & affected his breathing
followed with sweatings in the morning Loss of Appetite
and Pale Colour. Last summer he went to the Goat whey &
Rode about as much as the Weather would permitt
which happened to be very unfavourable during his
stay there however he thought himself a little better
after he came home About the begining of thes winter
he had another Fever as before attended with a sore throat
the Cough Violent & much bound at first but became looser
as the fever abated what he spit up then & still continues
to do is a tough thick Phlegm very ill to come up and
seems to be from far down in his breast. He sometimes
Vomits with the Cough & when violent complains of Pain
in both sides of his breast. His breathing is Easy when
sitting or lying but quicker upon walking. His Pulse at the
Lowest is 80 from that to 100 His stomach is weak tho'
he is very regular both in Eating & Drinking. He has an
Issue in his Arm has been blooded several times as symptoms
indicated has had several blisters which were kept open
as long as he could bear it. Variety of Pectorals have
been used as Pil Scillit Julap Ammonia with ElixirParegoric

Bitters Pil Pectoral & for 2 Months past has been laking
the Cortex Peruvium with a very small proportion of Opium
made into Pills which he thinks has been more usefull
to him then any thing he has hitherto taken but still the
Cough & symptoms continues & tho he does not
remarkably Decay yet he does not gain any thing


He is ofan Active stirring Disposition . He can ly upon
either side but when the Cough is most troublesome
inclines to his Back is regular in his Belly & goes
out every Day and Rides sometimes when the Weather
will permitt

if there is any thing that I have not mentioned which
you may Incline to be informed off you may let me
me know & I shall study to satisfy you. And as the
Expectations of all concerned are great from your

Dissapointed The Inclosed two Notes are sent as an
