Reply to Dr Scott concerning the case of Mr [Richard] Betham. Cullen writes that 'Your letter concerning Mr. Betham, my old and very particular friend gives me the utmost concern'. He believes the case to be desperate, and gives (in English, in the body of the text) directions for preparing digitalis. On the first page, Cullen has corrected the handwriting of his scribe, who (as on the third page) has written the name as 'Bethune'. He sends his compliments to Mr Betham's daughter. 16 May 1789

[DOC ID:3529]
Letter from Dr Campbell Betham, a former pupil of Cullen, concerning the case of his father, an old friend of Cullen's, who has died: 'I know dearest Sir from the very long friendship that subsisted between you and my father that we shall meet with the sincerest sympathy in you'. He refers to Margaret Cullen in particular. He then discusses his father's will (all to be left to him and to Anna, the youngest of his sisters), and his career prospects with a limited inheritance. He seeks Cullen's advice whether to take up an offer of practice in Whitehaven or go to London, where his uncle Mr Campbell and Dr David Pitcairn (husband of Cullen's niece, Elizabeth Almack) may be able to assist his career. 6 June 1789?
