Letter from John Mudie concerning the case of an unnamed gentleman in Montrose, aged 71, 'who lived regularly and sparely'. He had a fever with acute rheumatic symptoms 30 years ago, and more recently has suffered from piles and anal prolapse. Mudie is now treating him for pain in the hypochondrium and rectal tumours. 29 March 1787

Reply to Dr Mudie concerning the case of his unnamed patient in Montrose, pp.91-2. Cullen apologises for his delay in replying, as he has been in the country. He believes 'the disorder has arisen from the Suppression or if you will the ceasing of the Hæmorrhoidal discharge'. He approves Mudie's treatment of him, and says that 'it will be necessary for us to take some pains to obviate the obstruction that may be forming in the Viscera'. Prescriptions are included.2 April 1787

Letter from John Mudie concerning the case of his unnamed male patient with rectal and abdominal symptoms. His condition is rapidly deteriorating: 'I imagine there is Reason to dread an Obstruction, attended now with some degree of Inflammation in some of the Abdominal Viscera'. 16 April 1787
