DOC IDSummaryDate
[DOC ID:781]
Letter from John Duncanson in Inveraray regarding the case of Mrs Campbell, wife of Provost Campbell, who has a history of miscarriages and is now suffering from pains in the sixth month of her pregnancy. A postscript adds that Duncanson is 'like to be forced into a Military life' and mentions the possibility of 'Vaccancies in America'. 6 May 1766

[DOC ID:782]
Reply from Cullen - but largely in the hand of an assistant - addressed to John Duncanson in Inveraray regarding the case of Mrs Campbell, whose illness 'depends on a laxity & flaccidity of the Uterine system' in answer to Duncanson's enquiry. Cullen recommends bed rest in a cool chamber. A note in Cullen's had at the close reads: 'My hurry has obliged me to employ another hand to transcribe this letter which I hope you'll excuse', but the letter would seem to have been retained (perhaps because Cullen then found the time to write it out again himself?).10 May 1766

[DOC ID:793]
Reply, in form of a corrected, retained draft, in Cullen's own hand addressed to Dr Hope regarding the case of Mrs Campbell, who has suffered from a number of miscarriages. Cullen is offering his suggestions for revising their co-written directions, using a system of crosses etc. to indicate the points in the draft document where these revisions might be made. It is the cover-note for Letter 792, which is the marked-up draft of their co-signed set of directions. June 1766

[DOC ID:790]
Letter from John Duncanson in Inveraray regarding the case of Mrs Campbell, who has since the previous letter given birth to a stillborn child (the term 'abortion' is being employed here to indicate a natural miscarriage or stillbirth). An additional letter on the same sheet discusses Duncason's frustrated efforts to advance his military career.10 June 1766

[DOC ID:792]
Reply headed 'Advice for Mrs Campbell', neat draft bearing initials 'G G' and 'I H' [Dr. John Hope] (but not their signatures, so possibly a copy made by a secretary). This is a joint consultation annotated by Cullen to indicate his editorial suggestions [see Letter ID:793 which was the cover letter Cullen sent Hope]. Gives directions for Mrs Campbell's care given her history of miscarriages, and suggests that 'if for a year or two she did not fall with child, we can take upon us to promise her a perfect recovery'. 14 June 1766
