For Mr Mackenzie.
His ailments at present inconsiderable but unless soon remed¬
died may have bad consequences.
His measures hitherto proper, especially his abstinence from
animal food which must be continued:
as also the avoidance
of all
fermented & spirituous liqours except small
beer which will be
favourable for his bowels in their
present costive disposition.
In vegetable food I particularly recommend ripe fruits
& when not certainly ripe add much sugar.
Milk with water gruel &c.
Fresh air, exercise on horse back, but gentle & without fatigue
or overheating. All bodily exercise hurtful; & therefore walking
must be gentle, level & short at one time.
A voyage at sea; but as it is time of war, a cruise for
some weeks within the Mulls of Galloway & Kintire.
Keep cool in warm, & warm in cold weather and at all
times guard against Cold. Continue his flannels, never throw
off accustomed cloathing, avoid streams of air, evening air,
dampness &c. especially in feet
& legs.
As upon repetition Laxatives
often become useless & nau¬
seous I have proposed two
new medicines
The dose prescribed
may be too little or too much & his own experience must regulate
it afterwards. The dose should give one stool & no more. He
should never go more than two days without a stool.
