To Dr Gilchrist Concerning Mr Mutter vid. p. 14. [Ve.?]
No wonder that you have been disappointed in treating such Cases
as it depends so much on the time of life &c &c. -- but I hope
Dr Mutters symptoms are moderate &c. & may at least admit of some
relief -- I have doubts as well as you about general bleedings-
but I am clear that topical are proper & safe -- You may apply
the Leeches to either
Temple but rather the left. --- What ever may
be the state of Collapse I think there is always some degree of
Congestion & therefore I would not be
hindered by the slowness of
the Pulse from repeating the
topical bleeding when the pulse is
tolerably full & especially if there is any suffusion of
the Face or Eyes.
Your Blister upon the nape of the
neck was certainly proper -
& in due time I would repeat it on the Crown of
the Head - Your salt
of Hartshorn may be usefull,
but I am not fond of internal
Stimulants while the Disease is yet recent & as the notion of some
Congestion prevails strong with me. Among the internal
Stimulants
I would not include Wine or Animal Broths both which may
be necessary & safe from former habits - External Stimulants
in every shape very proper. -- Tho he has been liable to Diarrhœa
you are to expect that in the present circumstances the
intestines
will become if not Paralytic at
least very torpid & as the Eva¬
cuation by stool is very necessary and may be of service I think
you may even use a little freedom in moving his Belly.
