Copy of Directions for Mr Campbell


1stThat He shall avoid all food of heavy Digestion;
fat meat, salted, or smoaked or high seasoned
meat, and every thing fried in Butter, suppers
of animal food are highly Improper.


2 Malt Liquors especially strong malt Liquors should
be avoided. The safest and best kind of it is old
mild porter.


3 All sharp and weak bodied wines, Port or Madeira
are the best. He should never exceed at the most
a mutchkine of wine at Dinner and the same
quantity at supper.


4 Exercises of every kind is of the utmost Importance.
it should be abroad in the open air; when the
weather will permit; at other times by the
Spring Dale or hobby horse 1 in House -- His
Legs and feet should be well rubbed every night
with a flesh Brush


5 it is proper that his Belly should be kept constantly

open, when there is any tendency to Costiveness
let him take two, or three, or four of the
laxative Pills marked A at Bedtime: so as to
procure one, or at most two motions a Day
in his Belly next Day


Whenever he is distressed with flatulency pains
of his Stomach, or wandering Pains in his Limbs;
let him take every forenoon at 12 O Clock and in
the evening at seven four Table spoonfuls
of the Stomach Tincture marked B

Take 3 drachms each of English Gentian, Socotrine Aloes and Elecampane, and prepare a sufficient quantity to make 30 pills. Label: Laxative Pills two or three for a Dose

Take half-an-ounce of ground Peruvian Bark and 2 drachms each of bruised Cinnamon bark and ground Ginger, and mix. Add to one-and-a-half pints of boiling water, and after cooling, add half a pint of spirit of French wine. Let it stand to infuse for 2 days and strain. Label: stomachic tincture four Table spoonfuls for a Dose
