For Mr Dalyell ---

His complaints Rheumatick not dangerous - but as they seem periodical
more obstinate & difficult to cure, but still it may be done & I advise the following
measures. When he has been for about a fortnight free &
in less then a fortnight more may expect or between let him
begin to take the medicine prescribed below. It is to be first
dropped on a bit of Sugar, is to be dissolved in a Cup full of
white wine whey, pouring a little of the whey upon the sug↑ar↑
& breaking this with the back of a Spoon to as to mix it
better & then filling up the Cup & drinking it off washing it
down with one or two cupfulls there of the Same whey. This is
always to be done after he has lain down or bed & the effect

[Page 2]

Should be to bring a little moisture on his skin during the night,
but that too without giving any unusual heat or from that any
Restlessness, & he may continue to take such a dose every Evening
till a fit of his pain comes on, when he must abstain from
it, while the pain lasts & a fortnight after; but at the end of that fortnight
he is to begin again as before. If this medicine give any unusua[l]
heat the dose of it must be diminished or laid aside, but if as I ex¬
pect, it shall give no unusual heat, & even foul if giving any
perspiration, it will be proper to encrease the dose to 50 or 60 drop[s]
- Besides the use of this medicine the only other Remedy I would just no[w]
Recommend is the application of a blister to the part of his breast
where the pain especially comes, only the nipple must be avoided
or ↑if↑ the pained part comes very near the nipple, this must be covered in
a piece of wax Plaister Spread on Leather, & over this the blister
may be applied to the Size that is necessary & I would not have it
very small. The proper time for applying this blister is when
from Restless nights or other Symptoms he has Reason to
expect his pain is soon to come on. If it happen to be {illeg}
a day or two after the Blister is applied, let a part of the blister be kep[t]
open till the pain be entirely over. After that the blister is to b[e]
healed up & you are to wait for a fresh application, till {illeg}
occassion when a Renewal of the pain is expected. We can hardly
expect that such a periodical ailment can be discussed at onc[e]
& we must be contented if we can Succeeed by Repeating our
attempts at Several times. During the intervals of Mr D_s com¬
plaints he may live very much in his usual manner or
that he should avoid all violent exercise, avoid very full
living & particularly all excess in drinking. If he is suffi¬
ciently moderate there will be little occassion for nicety in {illeg}
of the quantity (↑quality↑) of either his meats or Drinks.
