Mr. Wm. Murray
Dear Sir ––

Mr. Murray a patient of yours
came to Consult me two days ago and I pro¬
mised to write to you concerning him.

I examined the hardness and tumor
on his Side & judge it to be of the steato¬
matous kind
, seated in the peritoneum.
The discussion of such tumours is a
difficult matter, and it is lucky that
they may often remain long without any
consequence, but am sorry to find that
this tumor in Mr. Murray has been of
late increasing and I believe it presses
considerably upon some of the Viscera
and particularly upon the right kidney.
Though the Case is very unfavourable

[Page 2]

for medicine I think no case that does not
appear to be immediately mortal should
be deserted without some attempts to relieve
it, and I would immediately have profes¬
sed some remedies but he tells me he had
formerly some medicines from you which
disagreed with him very much, and there¬
fore before I prescribe I must beg to know
what these are, and if you can inform me
in course of post it will be very obliging.
In the mean time please give him the
oil prescribed on other page for anointing
the tumour every night before his lying
down and after anointing let the whole
of the tumour
and hardness be covered with
the Emplastrum
Saponaceum. Let the
oil be anointed
with the tips of the fingers
dipped in it rubbing gently but conti¬

nuing that rubbing
for several minutes
an operation that is often more effect
than might be expected. I am with
great regard
