I have carefully considered the case communicated
to me by Mr Alexr. Mackenzie and I have a strong sus¬
picion that the symptoms depend on a Stone in the
bladder
tho I must allow this to be a little doubtful
as there is no account given of any previous
affection of the kidneys nor any accounts of
a trial by the Catheter. But however this
may be I shall advise no remedy that may
be incompatible with any other supposition
of an affection at the neck of the bladder.

The remedies hitherto employed the
decoction of Althea and Arabic Emulsion are upon
every Supposition very proper and if due care
is taken to obviate or remove costiveness I have
no objection to his taking frequently an Anodyne
at bed time. All these remedies as ↑they may be↑ directed
by their affects should be persisted in and the

only prescription I am to add at present is for the
use of the Uva Ursi. I have no doubt but that
this can be got in plenty and in good condition
at Inverness. Let it be cleared of Sticks and with
red leaves that are often mixed with it in gathering
and let some of the clean and fresh leaves be
carefully powdered. Of this Powder let the
Gentleman take half a dram for a dose in a
small cupful of water and let such a dose
be taken three times a day an hour before
each of his Meals. After taking such doses
two three days, the doses may be increased by
ten grains each and ever three or four days
such an increase may be made till the dose
is brought to a dram and at this dose he
is to continue till he has taken it for a
fortnight before he despairs of the effects of
the medicine. (During the use of the medicine

he is to continue in the same diet as hitherto, only
avoiding Acids as much as he can, and for the same
reason I would have him avoid all kinds of wine
or other fermented liquor but he may take a
little Spirits and water, but the spirit always
well diluted and upon the whole in very
moderate quantity.

This is the whole of the Advice that
I can offer at present but it is possible
that I may hereafter Advise another remedy
if I can find it either can be procured
here or can be prepared in the North
