For Mr Wm Lockhart
After consideration &c. perceive that he is threatened
with a dangerous
disease but case by no means desperate & by proper measures [immediate?]
[may be?] entirely recovered.
First must avoid all bodily exercise especially walking about in
the town of Edinburgh but keep
with in doors & sitting & writing extremely
improper. n=Necessary to be [inc?] in fresh air & either riding or a carriage
would be of service but circumstances of this case forbid the first &
the last more expensive than beneficial.
must therefore take to an
exercise preferable to every other i.e. sailing. a voyage somewhere
to the south the farther off the better.
This will be in place of every other remedy. & during his voyage
cannot be the better of any medicines except a laxative for costiveness
when occurring.
Before setting out a perpetual Issue in his
heart to be kept
open till cough &c entirely gone.
Tho no medicines needfull necessary to regulate his diet. Must
avoid all animal food except a little weak soup with bread at din¬
nertime. For the next, he should live entirely on milk & {illeg}
On land employ milk as far as his stomach &c. & milk & grain
preferable to roots & greens. At sea grain & fruit his chief food.
In drink must abstain from all strong drink whether wines
spirits malt liquors &c. & take to water & watery liquors as
toast water barley water with gruel weak tea,
milk & water or whey
when to be got. Tho continue on land, asses milk not necessary
& will be as well with an equal part of cows milk &
water gruel
warmed & well sweetened with sugar, in the morning.
Wherever he is, necessary to guard against cold &

therefore to be always warmly cloathd & to guard against every occasion
of catching cold altho as much as possible in the fresh air.
A flannel shirt day & night next his skin extremely useful
to him.

Take two ounces of Crystal Tartar, one ounce of pulp of French prunes and a sufficient quantity of simple syrup required to make a soft Electuary or Linctus. Label: Laxative Electuary. 2, 3 or 4 teaspoonfuls to be taken in the morning when costiveness requires.
