Mrs. Donald
Dear Sir
I had lately a letter from your patient
Mrs. Donald at Lylestoun {illeg}given me a good
deal of distress. I would be very happy to have
it in my power to give her relief, but her
letter is not so exact and explicit as to allow
me to advise very clearly and therefore must
apply to you for a more proper information.
She tells me that the Hemlock by my advice
and dispensed by you had been of very great
service to her and particularly had removed
what I thought was her principal ailment
the obstruction at the upper (↑lower ↑) orifice of the
Stomach but that after sometime the disorder
had returned tho the Hemlock was taken
in considerable quantity. I went much to
know what were the sensible effects of the
Hemlock which gave relief of these
[Page 2]
effects had failed to appear when the disorder returned
In this Case I shall suspect that the Hemlock
very liable to vary in its condition had ↑not↑ continued
to be of the same quality as at first.
He tells me also that since her disorder
returned She has frequently again taken the
hemlock "But that She could not persist
in it". But She does not tell me why
She could not persist in it and this Prevent
much to know and must know before I can
advise her to persist in it or to let it alone.
I find she is still troubled with a very
obstinate Costiveness which though difficult
must be constantly attempted. Please let me
know what different laxatives She has tried
What are the pills which give pain without
any effect. In what quantity of the Castor oil
does She take and bear? What Salts has She
tried and in what quantity? Did She ever
take any large doses of Magnesia? You will
please take the first apparently you can have
[Page 3]
by conversation or writing to get me information
upon these points and tell me all you can
further relative to her disease and present con¬
dition. In doing this you will very much oblige
Dear Gavin
Your faithful and most Obedient Servant
