Mr. Js Cochrane
I had the honour of your letter and though I
apprehended and wrote to my Lord Dundonald my appre¬
hensions with respect to Mr. James I am now however
extremely concerned from your accounts to find matters
advancing so fast. His bowels are certainly in a very
bad state and I am afraid will be difficult to mend
but let us do what we can. Please tell Mrs
Gilchrist that the Oil for anointing his belly
is very much the same as what She got in Town
or rather better but his disease is further
advanced and more obstinate. Let him continue
his drops and the Castor Oil every third day and
let him take every night and morning the bigness
of a bean or Small Nut of the Electuary pre¬
scribed on other Page and if he continues to
complain of pain and want of rest in the
night time let him take every second night at

bed time near a table Spoonful of the Syrup of white
Poppies. I believe you may get this medicine at
Culross but if you are not Satisfied with that let me
know when your Carrier comes in and I shall take
care to have the medicines Sent from hence.
I have no alteration to make in his Regimen
and would wish to have every part of that formerly
advised continued as far as possible. I am heartily
vexed to find the weather continue so unfavourable
With respectful Compliments to Mrs. Gilchrist I
have the honour to be
