For Mr Hamilton
The frequent returns of this inflammation of his eyes
makes me think that it depends upon a fault of his blood. This
I suspect is not to be cured by Mercury and may be better done
by washing out the matter by saline waters. For this purpose
I have ordered below a Solution which I have frequently found
usefull and more convenient than sea water drank at the
Shore. Two or three table spoonfuls of it are to be mixed with
a muchkin or more of Spring water and this is to be taken
at several draughts every morning some time before break¬
fast. It is intended that the doses should keep his belly regu¬
lar & therefore if it does not the dose must be increased or if
it gives more than one stool a day it is to be diminished
While he uses this remedy he should have his hair cut out,
and should have his hair whole head washed with cold water
every morning before he begins to take his salts. He may
either have water poured upon his hind head held over a
bason or he may dip his head in water and if he can
open his eye lids under the water it may be the better
[Page 2]
that these remedies may have their proper effect.
Mr Hamilton should in the mean time avoid all excess
use of his eyes in reading or writing and with this view
he will do well to pass the summer in the Country
but there he should avoid being much in the sun or
in any strong light and take care to use no sort of
exercise that may any ways heat his body
For the time he is in the country he should use
A milk and vegetable diet very entirely & at least
except it be a little broth he should take animal
food very seldom and sparingly
Take two ounces of Glauber’s Salts, an ounce of soluble Tartar, half an ounce each of Spanish sea-salt and Polychrest Salts, and twelve ounces of spring water. Dissolve and strain. Label: Aperient Solution.
